About the station and area
The station was inaugurated on 30 October 1977 and is located deep in the mountain at Norrmalm, next to the Kungsträdgården park that gave it its name. With approximately 34 meters down to the platform, it is one of the subway's deepest stations. The artist Ulrik Samuelson designed the platform as an underground garden in green, red and white – colors that allude to the baroque garden that once existed above ground, with its gravel paths, marble sculptures and greenery. He also drew inspiration from the palaces that have previously existed at the Kungsträdgården, including the Makalös castle that burned down in 1825. The partly bare, unblasted rock walls have over the years given rise to an unusual grotto ecosystem; among others, the cave spider Lessertia dentichelis lives here, and in a study published in 2016, previously unknown fungal species found on the station's granite walls were described.
