About the station and area

Gamla stan was put into use on 24 November 1957, when the connecting track between Slussen and Hötorget was inaugurated, and was designed by the architect Magnus Ahlgren. Unlike the subway's underground stations, it is located above ground, partly under the Central Bridge, on the west side of Gamla stans (Stadsholmen) near Mälartorget. During the reconstruction in 1997–1998, the station received its artistic decoration (inaugurated in 1998): Göran Dahl's cement mosaic with medieval woven patterns, inspired by the Överhogdal and Skogbonades, as well as a weather sun motif, and Britta Carlström's woven patterned fence between the tracks.
