About the station and area
Mariatorget was opened on April 5, 1964, when the first stage of the red line was inaugurated. The station is located on Södermalm with platforms approximately 20 meters below ground. The artistic decoration was created by the ceramist Karin Björquist together with the architect Kjell Abramson, with walls clad in yellow-brown ceramic rods made at Gustavsberg. At the western entrance stands Asmund Arles' bronze sculpture "Man and Pillar", and at the exit there are wrought iron gates designed by Britt-Louise Sundell. Södra station's eastern entrance is at Swedenborgsgatan, a few minutes' walk away.
