About the station and area
The station is one of the subway's oldest: it was already opened in 1933 as a tram station under the name Södra Bantorget and was built in an open shaft under Götgatan. The line was put into use for subway traffic in 1950. The partially preserved yellow tile walls from the 1930s bear witness to this original environment. Gunnar Söderström was responsible for the coloring of the pillars, and Mari Pårup executed a wall decoration and floor mosaic in the southern ticket hall in 1997. The station is located under Götgatan on Södermalm at Medborgarplatsen square, next to Medborgarhuset and Söderhallarna.
