About the station and area
Västertorp was opened on 5 April 1964 as part of the red line's first stage section between T-Centralen and Fruängen. Unlike the inner-city underground, this is an above-ground station, with a central platform 42.8 meters above sea level – the second highest in the entire metro network. The station serves the Västertorp district in Söderort, whose town plan by Sven Markelius gained legal force in 1947 and which was built in 1949–1954 with slatted houses and star-shaped point houses. The artistic decoration was carried out in sgraffito technique by Jörgen Fogelquist and inaugurated in 1982, with motifs taken from Andrée's balloon trip to the North Pole in 1897.
